Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kyasia Brown

ARCHIVES
“HITTING THE  MAJOR Cs: COURSES, CHORUS, & CLASSES”

We are back with another exclusive here at the Christopher's Chronicles, and you know we bring nothing but our very own celebs to you. Let me clear this up so there’s no confusion. Being featured in the Phoenix Family is not all about having the highest GPA all the time. There are times when we have to showcase maturity and real talent.

You probably never would have thought cheer, track, and vocals could flow in the same sentence, but in this next interview, this next hummingbird cheetah hybrid can definitely prove you wrong. This Phoenix, is the anchor leg for varsity track, probably your favorite soprano, and definitely the life of the party. She is definitely here to make sure she leaves her mark here at University STAMPED!

Clues ringing a bell yet!? And if you think it’s Kizzle then you’re totally right! Don’t know who Kizzle is? Then I think it’s about time you met her, and I mean the REAL her. Without further ado, I would like to introduce, the very own, the one and only, Kyasia Brown

You are definitely one of the best singers known at University. You coming from Newark’s Arts High School, you definitely have the voice to back it up. Being an athlete, there is definitely a lot of intense training, to stay robust. They also say that health and vocal ability go hand in hand. Would you please to explain to people how true this is?

It is very true. It is also true that I am one of the best singers here, especially coming from Arts, however, I believe Uni is teaching way more than Arts.  Not to go too off topic, but to be an athlete is a privilege for me because it can either go one way or the other. Grades have a lot to do with the ability to play, and I have been on and off with track because of my grades, but that doesn’t stop me from going out my way to succeed more in track. But now that I’m doing cheer tryouts I feel like I'm pushing myself more where I need to be.

Track is one of the main sports that requires constant endurance, and as humans, we all have times where we feel the need to give up. It’s a natural thing. But I want to know from you is what has track taught you about endurance?
Track has taught me a lot about endurance. It's not about how you start, but more of how you finish. Being the Anchor Leg for the Relay Team has taught me how everyone depends on you to win for the team. The strength to have everyone counting on you is a lot of pressure, but you can’t let fear overpower your stability.

If you plan on attending college, or any form of postsecondary education, is running track anywhere in that plan at all?

Actually no it is not, at all. For me, I don’t get along with science, but I would love to attend Howard for Forensics. I would want to figure out how people died.

Now let’s talk about cheerleading. Though you haven’t made the team YET---and I say yet because you definitely have what it takes to make the team-- what inspired you to want to be a cheerleader?

I had cheered for 3 years back in elementary school. It is very fun to me, but it’s not as serious as track. I take track very seriously. Cheer is fun and it gives me time to focus on myself, especially knowing what I could do best.

Preparation is definitely the key to success. When you make the cheer team, you have added on another commitment to your plate, including track, working, and your personal life. How are you going to prepare yourself emotionally, mentally and physically?

I won’t let drama get in my way. AND THAT IS STAMPED. Doing all these things help me know what to focus on best rather than the streets. It will keep me out of trouble. Work is more of a secondary focus for me. These sports are very valuable to me in a way as if it were my second job.

A common phrase that people use nowadays is “we are not the same.” A lot of times people like to compare, and make it seem like they are on the same exact level that you are, and can bring the same exact thing that you can to the table. There is no way someone should ever possibly believe that. So what we want to know is what do you believe you could bring different to the cheerleading team? In other words, what separates you from the rest of the prospects trying out?

I definitely believe I could bring more sass to the cheers and the team. Plus more ideas, if we ever happen to be stuck on something--creative ideas at that! Also knowing that it won’t be as many juniors on the team. And I definitely look forward to being co-captain next year.

There is never a person who can bring it like you can. We all have something that separates us from the weak, and the common. As bad as it sounds, it is definitely true. To even be a spotlight, you are definitely somebody to be smiled upon. What do you believe makes you one of the best athletes in the game here at University?

Wow! Well I never look back, I never give up, I always believe in what I could do. No one can never stop me when I'm on my grind. When I’m in my zone, I stay in my zone. PERIOD!

Wow! That was inspiring Kyasia. You have such a way with words, and I believe that a lot of us who didn’t know a lot about you, have learned more about who you really are. We always wondered where that sass came from, but it seems that this has been your personality since diapers. I hope your mindset stays the same. You will make it far in life with your philosophy. To be honest, this is only just the beginning, so if you’re doing all this now, then you definitely have the entire world at your hands. I wish you much luck in your future endeavors as well. And that’s all the time that we have for today. I am your Christopher's Chronicles main journalist, Devon Christopher Corry. Peace!
